The MacPherson strut front suspension layout on VWG 'A5' platform cars (such as Golf 5, 6, Scirocco, A3, S3, Leon, Octavia) is a common design. Although a popular choice for manufacturers due to its simplicity and low manufacturing cost, the standard design has some disadvantages when it comes to high-performance applications.
Firstly, there is almost zero freedom to adjust the static geometry of camber, caster or roll-centre which, as we know from our racing programme, is absolutely critical to the handling of the VWG A5 platform cars.
The other downside to using high-performance is that because this layout tends to transmit road noise and vibration directly to the body, manufacturers need to add extra insulation and noise reduction. In other words, a lot of movement in the factory soft rubber bushing that controls the lower control arm.
